My computer will not connect to the internet. 1 Month, 2 Weeks ago

My desktop has stopped connecting to the internet. It was working one day, and just stopped working the next. I know it isn't my internet, because I connected another computer using the same cable, and it worked just fine. Someone said I may have a dial-up trojan? I have tried to run anti-malware software, but it won't run because the computer won't connect to the internet. I also tried running in safe mode, and the computer would not let me do it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I connect to the internet using mozilla firefox. Thank you.

Try checking the options in Internet Explorerer (IE)
Open up IE.
- hit the "Tools" selection
- hit the "Internet Options" selection
Once Internet Options window pops-up
- goto "Connections" tab
- click on "LAN Settings" button
- clear the "Use a proxy server for you LAN......."
This will sometime allow you to connect back to the Internet
Even if you are using Mozilla make sure you follow that step in IE.
In Firefox make sure that the proxy settings are removed by completing the following:
Open Firefox
- hit Tools
- hit Options
Once options opens go to the Advanced
- then click on Network
- then settings
Clear any proxy settings that you did not set.

One more thing to try is to open up command prompt and type in the following commands:
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh interface ip reset resetlog.txt
reboot the PC, then try to connect again
